Volunteer Job Description
Volunteers are needed for a variety of duties at the senior center. Listed below are descriptions of these jobs, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Shirley Stueve at 340-3220 x103 for more information. Volunteers register with the RSVP program to be rewarded at their annual luncheon for the hours that they give.
Volunteer Jobs
Bingo Caller Willing to call Bingo once a month or to be an alternate caller.
Time needed – 1 hour – Tuesday or Thursday 12:30 – 1:30pm
Bingo Banker Collect money before each game.
Birthday Bash Volunteers to set up, give out tickets for drawing, serve cake and ice cream, and clean up after party.
Time needed – 1 hour – once a month on the first Friday of each month at 1:00pm
Blood Pressure Assist nurse who is taking blood pressure. Volunteer to maintain index file and sign-up sheet.
Time needed – 2 hours from 9:00 to 11:00am on Thursdays
Alternates needed as well.
Center Reception Desk Assist with various clerical duties, greet visitors and answer phones as needed.
Volunteers need to be courteous, cheerful, patient and helpful to visitors. A positive outlook and a sense of humor is required to do this very important job.
Time needed- 4 hours once a week, ongoing or as an
alternate.
Class Instructors Or Leaders Instruct or lead classes in areas of expertise or knowledge.
Community Outreach Handing out information flyers and answering questions as well as promoting the Joslyn Senior Center and it’s many programs.
Time needed – 2 to 4 hour shifts depending on the location.
Community Outreach (Health Screenings) Volunteer to assist nurse at various locations with sign-up sheets and handouts.
Time needed – 10:00am to noon - Location and days will
vary.
Decorating (Parties And Events) Center will provide decorations and materials. Volunteers will assist with decorating and balloons. After event volunteers will take down and carefully
pack up those decorations to be saved. Boxes to be secured and identified on all sides with a magic marker.
Time needed – approximately 1 – 2 hours
Greeters (Public Events At Center) Perform a variety of duties, depending on the occasion, for events catering to the general public. Volunteer will greet, seat, and give out informational materials.
Time needed – 1 to 4 hours
Health Fair At Center (Annual) Volunteers will assist with crowd management in all areas of the building. Other duties will include membership sign-ups, snack bar and juice station, greeting guests and answering questions. Time needed – Approx. 4 hours
Meals On Wheels Volunteers will come to the Center on designated days to pick up and deliver meals to senior shut-ins. Drivers are always given the same route each time along with careful directions and names and addresses. This is a very special volunteer need and so greatly appreciated. Time needed – one day a week commitment of 2 hours
Newsletter Mailings / General Mailings Volunteers will assist Newsletter Editor with inserts, stuffing envelopes etc. as a group effort. Time needed – 1 to 4 hours as needed
Phone Support Volunteers will make reminder / confirmation calls to members with regard to programs / events. Time needed – as need arises and volunteers schedule.
Snack Bar Sell and serve refreshments at stage productions.
Time needed – Intermission time at performances which may be at 2:00pm or 7:00pm performances.
Speaker (Lectures, Events) Volunteer will share and speak on topics on which he or she is knowledgeable. May
include trip travel, foreign or domestic. Time needed – 1 hour
Special Events (Parties, Health Fairs, Open House, Etc) Volunteers to assist where needed. IE: Food preparation, serving.
Writing (Newsletter Articles) Write an article or a story for the Senior Scene. Any forms of creative writing, including poetry, essays and short stories, or informative articles on a subject of your choice. Also from time to time, get an assignment from the Newsletter Editor
to do a story or article on a particular subject.
Time will vary as needed
Volunteers for Joslyn Theater
Costume Design The ability to design and put together, costumes for stage productions.
Wardrobe Dress performers if needed and maintain wardrobe for stage productions.
Set Design And Construction The creative ability to help design, construct and paint sets for stage productions.
Stage Hands Volunteers to move props on and off stage during performances and other various duties.
